We all know there are redheads in sports, but which sport contains the highest percentage? This is the question not even the internet seems to be able to answer. The only question people seem to want answered is who are our “hottest red heads.” I can find our “top 10 sporting redheads” in an article from 2011 (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/redheads/story-e6frf9if-1226158909444) maybe they are still the same because there are not many of them!
So if 1-2% of the world has red hair the overall number is going to be low, but which sport “attracts” red hair? Does their red hair make them better or worse than their team mates or have absolutely no impact?!
Whilst trying to obtain some facts and figures for this post, I found it quite amusing that in 2011 before the NFL draft where an executive voiced concerns over quarter back Andy Dalton because he had red hair. He was questioning whether there had ever been a successful red-headed quarter back that had done well.
Since being signed back in 2011 he has gone on to hold many amazing records he is one of four quarterbacks in NFL history to have thrown for over 3000 yards in each of his first three seasons, as well as just one of five to have passed for at least 20 touchdowns in each of his first three seasons. Dalton is the only quarterback to lead the Cincinnati Bengals to four consecutive playoff berths, and just one of five quarterbacks to lead his team to the playoffs in each of his first four seasons. He is also the Bengals franchise record holder for passing yards and touchdowns in a season.
Then in 2014, Dalton received a six-year extension that could be worth as much as $115 million, with team performance-based incentives. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Dalton)
So it sounds like it was appropriate to be worried about having an red haired NFL quarterback……
We have our own red haired athletes here in Australia, you would have to say AFL would have the highest percentage or does it just come across that way because it is a highly publicised sport, do we not know about all the red haired lacrosse players we have?!
